Space Seeds Arrive

Space seeds

On Wednesday 20th of April last week we were just getting ready for P.E, and then we got to go out two at a time to plant our space seeds. I felt really excited and overjoyed that we got to plant our special seeds. First, we went outside and we had a spoon so that we could scoop soil with the spoon into our little pots.

Each person got to put soil in two pots each, I wouldn’t be able to count how many pots there were, but their were quite a few trays. The pots that I filled were in a bright yellow tray as bright as the sun, and the soil looked very cosy in the pots, it was like the soil was in a little bed sleeping.

A few days later when we were in maths we got called up table by table this time instead of two by two. I got to plant to seeds, but not at the same time. When our table got called up we each got a thin cloud white stick with a number on to put into the soil, we had a tiny pair of tweezers to pick up the seed. The seed was so tiny I could hardly see it, which made it very hard to pick up. It was like someone had put butter all over it, so it was very slippery and I kept on dropping it. Eventually, I got the seed into the soil. By this time, I still couldn’t believe that the seeds were from ISS (International Space Station). After, I had planted my first seed a few minutes later, we got called up to plant another seed. When we were planting our seeds, I forgot to actually plant the seed, because I had just put the stick with the number on and Miss Dawson had to call me back.

We were given two packs of seeds - a red one and a blue one. We don't know which pack has been on the ISS. Once we have sent off our results we will earn which of our seeds have been in space.

The Space Seeds Have Landed !

The seeds are back!

At 04:26am on Tuesday 2nd March, Commander Scott Kelly of NASA and Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Kornienko and Sergey Volkov of Roscosmos landed safely back on Earth in Kazakhstan. With them was 2kg of rocket seeds which have completed their six month mission on board the ISS. The seeds were sent up on 02 September on Soyuz TMA-18M and were stored in the Columbus laboratory on board the station.
Upon returning to Earth the seeds then travelled with Scott Kelly to NASA in Houston on a charter flight from Moscow, Russia and returned to the UK last Thursday.
The seeds will arrive in our school on either 12th or 13th April and our going to be planted and carefully monitored by our two Year 5 classes. This is a scientific experiment that has been developed by real scientists and we are very excited to be a part of it.

Year 6 Science Week Jigsaw Workshop

Year 6 were excellent group leaders, working with their buddy groups in our space-themed activities.  In our jigsaw workshop, the children re-created the process of a space walk, based on team work and communication.

A busy support team built a jigsaw one side of the screen, whilst our space walkers prepared themselves for their mission by putting on space gloves - very tricky to wear whilst handling small jigsaw pieces.  Each piece of the jigsaw had to be passed to the space walker with specific instructions as to where it should go.  After some trial and error the children worked out that a systematic approach worked best.  They thought carefully about the exact instructions they had to give to their space walkers and began to see just how specific and patient they had to be .

Out year 6 children were excellent role-models to the younger children, guiding them through the tasks with patience and team spirit.  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it!

I loved the activities we did in buddy groups I had no idea that meteorites made craters on the moon. I learned a lot I liked the mad scientists too.It has been the best week and I can't wait for the dome. I'm a bit upset that its almost over.

Hello Mr Parascandolo, we would like to tell you how much we have enjoyed this week. It has all been excellent but our favourite part was the mad scientists as for one they were hilarious and second of all they were crackers we can’t wait to do the dome.

Buddy Group Science - What a Success!

Buddy group science was an amazing success today. Our Year 6 leaders did an amazing job leading and guiding their groups. The team work and cooperation amongst the children was phenomenal. We were also visited by our Space Ambassador, Roger who answered many of the children's questions about space and rockets.
Here is a selection of highlights from the day.

Learning about space suits in the Reception classrooms. 
The children learnt about space suits and their special features. They designed space suits, created space logos and wrote letters of application to become astronauts. 
Who knows? Maybe the next British astronaut will be an OLOR pupil!

Learning about floating and sinking in the Year 1 classrooms. 
Super scientist were in action here. Predictions and theories about what might happen were made. These were tested and scientific conclusions were drawn. It was also great fun dropping objects into large containers of water!

Making Rocket Movies in the Year 2 classrooms
Creativity was buzzing here. Children were busy designing space backgrounds. Others were constructing rockets. Teams of actors were rehearsing amazing scripts. 

Testing Balloon Powered Rockets in Year 3
Teams of rocket scientists were hard at work in the Year 3 classrooms. They tested, evaluated and retested their straw rockets. The tension during the 'rocket races' when each group tested their most successful rocket was almost unbearable!

Investigating craters in Year 4
The scientists in Year 4 were busy making predictions about which of their 'meteorites' would make the biggest crater. Rulers were carefully positioned so that fair testing could be carried out. Predictions were made, meteorites were dropped and craters were carefully measured. 

Rocket construction in the Year 5 classrooms
Rockets were carefully constructed from strips of paper. Fins were skilfully added and the rockets were launched by blowing through straws. Great fun was had by all. 

Team work and Space Walking in the Year 6 classrooms
A simulated space walk was taking place in these classrooms. Astronauts went on a space walk behind large screens. Teams of builders and engineers passed pieces of a jigsaw to them with detailed instructions about the placement of each piece. The astronauts, wearing thick astronaut gloves, had to assemble the jigsaws correctly.

The children had many questions for Roger. The most popular one being, 'How do astronauts go to the toilet?'  Roger explained how weightlessness affects astronauts bodies and what they have to do to counteract this. He explained why astronauts can't eat digestive biscuits. He was even able to give an estimate of the size of the 'flames' coming out of the back of the rocket during a launch. 

How far did our rocket travel?

Yesterday, despite the very windy conditions,  our team of Mad Scientists managed to launch one rocket from the centre of our school field. We all watched with awe as it zoomed up into the sky. Nobody was sure where the rocket landed as it was whipped away by the wind.   Well, its landing zone can now be revealed.  It was discovered yesterday! The rocket was blown out of our field, across one field, over the London Road and landed near to the Marks and Spencers garage.  It survived its long journey reasonably intact.

Don't feel disappointed if you missed the launch because of the weather. 
The Mad Scientist Team have promised to return in the near future so that they can launch another rocket.
